Fitness and proteins belong together as inseparable friends because protein is one of the most versatile and healthy nutrients out there. Either if you want to lose weight or build muscle, protein will be out there making it easier for you.
Studies show how people who enrol in physical activity to lose weight would reach their goals more quickly when they increase their intake of proteins. And experience tells us just how effective whey protein is to increase muscle mass. Thus, many different brands are including proteins and making them more easy to consume, as in those tasty protein bars we will review in this article.
However, if you want to choose the best protein bars to buy in 2019, there are plenty of things you need to consider. Seemingly smaller things such as the flavour and the texture become a big deal when you’re picky, and you always need to know the nutritional facts behind that fantastic taste before buying them.
So, let’s start with one of my favourites:
Mars Protein Bars
I have always praised Mars Bars for its flavour, and they do not only satisfy a sweet tooth, but you also get 19 grams of protein for each bar. They are crunchy and tend to melt in your mouth with the original chocolate bar taste you love.
And if you’ve ever wondered whether Mars Bars are a guilty pleasure or a healthy snack, you would like to know each bar gives you only 200kcal. You get 20 grams of carbohydrates each time you have a new Mars Bar, so it’s highly advised to consume in and around physical activity, and not every single time you get a sweet tooth.
Still, if you consider they contain around 20% fewer calories than many other brands, you will understand why Mars Protein Bars are one of my favourite tasting bars in 2019.
Verdict: I would say Mars protein bars have a tasty combination that’s totally out of this world. They are great in and around exercise to fuel your gym time and get you 19 grams of proteins, which is enough to activate your anabolic window.
Snickers Protein Bars
Okay, I know what you’re thinking now. “Snickers bars to speed up my fitness goals? Did I miss something?”. The truth is that I was impressed when I saw this tasty treat for the first time and decided to take a look at the nutritional facts and give it a try.
Snickers protein bars offer a similar taste to the classical Snickers but with no more than 18 grams of carbs for each bar. Instead of having too much sugar, it gives you 18 grams of protein and 200 calories for each treat. That’s half the sugar of regular Snickers bars!
I was impressed when I realised my praised Snickers protein bar had even fewer carbs compared to Mars Bars, and almost the same amount of proteins. However, as good as it may sound, you should be careful with Snickers bars as well. They are not going to help if you start eating them throughout the day. Be smart and combine them with your workouts to get the best possible results.
Verdict: Fantastic taste and a healthy treat if you can’t help but indulge in a Snickers bar. These protein bars are not exactly low-carbohydrate, but they do their work pretty well if you use them wisely. Before and during your workout they would be great to fuel your muscles and open up your anabolic window.
Protein Cake Bites by Optimum Nutrition
Next, we can’t stop talking about the protein bar options by Optimum Nutrition, and I decided to start with Protein Cake Bites. These sweet treats come in many different flavours, and every single one of them sounds incredibly tasty. Just read the flavour names “Berry Cheesecake”, “Chocolate Frosted Doughnut”, and “Birthday Cake”, and tell us otherwise.
Each one of these options contains not 18 or 19 grams of protein, but a total of 20 grams of protein for each bar. That’s approximately the amount of protein you can get in 70 grams of chicken breast, and they are designed to be used before workouts, especially for those who are about to start a very difficult workout session.
When I first read the nutritional facts in Protein Cake Bites, I almost dropped it when I saw 25 grams of carbs. But then I realised only 5 grams are sugars (simple carbs) and the rest are healthier carbohydrates that will not affect glucose or cause insulin peaks. However, you need to take special care if you’re planning to drop down your weight. These might not be your best allies.
Verdict: Protein Cake Bites is definitely for those who are under heavy workouts. They contain more proteins and will fuel your training with extra carbs. One of the best things about this option is that you will have different tasty flavours to choose from, and all of them are equally appetising.
Protein Crunch Bars by Optimum Nutrition
I realised Optimum Nutrition has one protein bar with a higher carbohydrate count for those who need extra fuel (as in Protein Cake Bites), and another version which stands on the midline between low-carb and high-carb protein bars. That’s the case of Protein Crunch Bars.
With Protein Crunch Bars, you get the same 20 grams of proteins for each one of them, but fewer carbs (13 grams) and less sugar (4 grams) than protein cake bites.
Verdict: Protein Crunch Bars are formulated for those who are planning to perform a heavy workout, but they don’t need too many carbs. It may be an option for those who are following a weight-loss diet as well, as long as they pay extra attention to their macros and do not overeat.
Protein Stix Protein Bars by Optimum Nutrition
Now, if you don’t need that extra fuel before a challenging workout session and if you’re looking for a low-carb option, I recommend you to go for Protein Stix, by Optimum Nutrition. It’s a sweet and tasty snack but won’t contain more than 2 grams of carbs. Yes, only 2 grams of carbohydrates against 11 grams of protein.
Protein Stix contains fewer calories than their counterparts, a total 130kcal that’s enough for a pre-workout boost but not too much to cause an alteration to your diet. That’s why Protein Stix is the one to go if you’re looking for a sweet treat as a dessert.
Verdict: If you’re worried about counting calories, Protein Stix is probably the one for you. It has fewer calories than the rest and contains a higher proportion of proteins for each gram of carbs.
